The 5 o'clock

This vintage picture is a good and pretty standard example of how shadows, expecially through window can reveal so much about a picture and capture the interest of its audience. The cops standing in the center of the pool of light obviously has a lot of attention drawn to them, to have such opposing images and colors against one another create a focal point and area of interest. They world behind the two pool of light is hard to make out, and become less important and less of what the photo is about. The photo defiently concerns opposites and contrasting aspects of what is brilliant and breathtaking in a photo.

Are We There Yet?

This picture caught my eye particularity because of how incredible it is. The colors are magnificent, and the reflections of the clouds are full of deep shadows that change in intensity that battle with intense and bright colors that make the boat appear as if it were floating in sifre and water. I love how the blue in the picture changes slightly the orange into an amber or rust color that dissipates or tones down as it reaches the edges. It is hard to distinguish in the picture between sky and water, but the shadows and colors that complete the image are so intense that it doesn't matter, it is not what I am thinking about and it is not what my eyes are trying to understand.

Seaside at Sunset

I really enjoy the amount of black and shadows in this photo. The blacks stand out against the grey that is reflective and metallic looking giving the entire photo a very vintage feel for some reason. The dark and overpowering cloud in the foreground of the image is very intimidating and makes me feel a little frightened until I look at the white sun and its effect on the rest of the image. The shiny grey water seems to go on forever and the pier that jets out into it seems like an intruder or the most opposite kind. It is an extreme of the space it consumes and works well creating a pleasing picture that is composed well.

HAAAY!

I love the green that is thrown into this picture against the white, grey and blue. It is very much a contrasting color that works with the others and isn't too intrusive or bold where I am left feeling like all I can look at is the pile of green horses. I love the streaks of light reflecting in the water. Each one acts as an intense light beam working its way through the water and asking my eyes to follow the line and path it created. The blue that is hinted at in the corner provides some darker tones and colors to the photo and without it I think the image would be too light. Black and grey is present in the area and provides another dimension to the photo.

Fire in the Sky

The orange in the sky takes and reflects so much light, and holds numerous pockets of shadow that the blue from behind can only peak through in small spaces that are closer to the light source, allowing more white and less black to be seen. The black that is in the the foreground is so bold and defiant against the orange and white. The white light that is reflecting off the orange makes the clouds look like they are on fire, only letting through white light in its purest form. The blue behind the orange brilliance acts as a bridge between the black and orange and composes the picture well, because without it there would be no go between from the opposing colors.

No P in my ool

I have no idea where this room and its walls start and finish and I can thank the use of light and shadow for that. The light coming in from the window shines onto the wall and onto two different but similar enough colors that it is hard to tell what is really there and what is just shadow. Since so much of the wall has similar color, much of the image blends together but doesn't provide much contrast or texture. The interior as a whole is a bit bland and not very interesting. The blue of the water is the primary object that my eyes are attracted when looking at the image. The blue is such a contrast from the grey and boring walls. the pool also shows enough texture to be interesting but not take too much control of the space comanding attention.

Stop Makin' Me Look Into the Light

This image is interesting thanks to all the criss crossed lines that jumble and mix. I feel like there should be more shadows in this picture, but there isn't and I think that is thanks to the amount of light that is lighting up all the objects leaving the shadows no place to hide. There is more grey tones in the photo than there is black shadow and I think that is a little offsetting to me, because I feel like there should be more blacks to create more contrast. There are no real defining blacks or objects that attract my eye, and I that bothers me quite a bit. While light and shadow composition is done really well, I can't get over the ideathat there should be more blacks than there is.

Orange Sky

I find it interesting how just about all objects in this photograph show up white against the orange background. The white is a huge contrast from the black that is usually seen in photos like this. It makes me think that the orange offsetting the color and changing the shadows into light. The white makes me feel a bit unsettled especially how it reflects light more so than retains it. The black that is is the water and shadows is a huge contrast to the white and makes the photo feel all backwards. The definition and composition of the photograph being so backwards is very interesting and new for my eyes to look at and get lost in, and after looking at it for some time, I can see more color in the white objects than I could ever see in the dark blacks that normally take over a photograph.

No Power

While this picture doesn't have a whole lot of shadows, the light and color that make up the image certainly makes up for the lack there of. The person and room/doorway they are sitting in is so dark and present that the white light in the background almost comes as a surprise, especially with the hint of grey that allows the figure to stand out and be defined even more. The white framing the doorway is very intriguing to me, I want to look at it and figure out where and why it is coming through because it provides so much of a contrast and definition that my eye can't help but be drawn to it.

Sittin'

While the the buildings in the background of the picture should and could be the focus of the image, i find the rocks in the foreground to be just as if not more interesting because much of its texture and definition can be seen and stared at. The rocks toward the corner of the picture have more white on them than they do blacks or shadows. As the rocks descend down to the water, they gain more and more shadows and texture as more black finds its way onto the rocks and then into the water.

Run!

This image does not have a whole lot of tones and colors in it, in fact most of it is grey color but the shadows that do exist in the photo stand out and create just enough dimension that most all of the objects can be clearly defined. The only time this is not true is when the objects get close to the light source, and the outlines become a bit hazy and things blend together. It is also in that space that there are smaller and fewer shadows that find their place on the object. In the freground of the image, the objects have more dimension, definition and tone establishing what the object is and how it exists in its space. I personally like the objects in the foregound better because there is more shadow, tone and texture to each object making them more interesting to look at.

2nd Street

I really enjoy the blues that bring this group of photographs to life. The street lights have a real blue tint to them, thus changing the color of the entire photo. Contrasting the blue light are the colors the houses read, which is much like a tan/amber color. I like how the two colors work with each other to create other colors. I can see purples, and greens in the mixing of the lights, and I think that it really brings them to light and is just another example how light can take on different characteristics.

Shall We Dance

While this photo is very lighthearted and cute, it also has great composition. I love the contrast between the two individuals and the black striped background. Each individual has so much more grey tones in their clothes with splashes of white throughout that allows them to pop easily from their background. The shadows against the wall are a light grey with no variance in color or detail. The shadows exist more to show an image and not present a new color or texture to the photograph.

Wrong Way

This picture gives me a very eerie feeling but that is only because of its use of shadow and light and how well the two play with each other to create a wonderful picture. the trees in the foreground are much brighter then those that fade into the background, but do not show too much detail, just show the dark outline and stringy branches that seem to take over much of the sky in the image. The person in the picture looks tiny in comparison to the trees, and they also don't look as dark and bold as the trees. The light source is coming from the background of the picture, but due to the amount of fog and trees in its way, there isn't too much light in the picture. I really enjoy how the ground is so dark and reflects just enough light to reveal some greys as well as whites.

Stop and Smell the Flower

This picture makes me smile because of the subject and how interesting it is. Each fish provides a different shade and tint to what makes up the flower. Each fish can stand alone but when combined together make up a flower there is so much dimension that i catch myself staring at each tiny fish. I feel that on each fish the color changes and the in between each fish is a darker blue that shows how divided it is and yet all the colors on the flower add so much difference and changes that it is not boring to look in one direction or another. I like the lighter fish, as they seem to have a lot of white in them, or that a lot of white light is reflected off them and seem to let shadow and light define and create texture, tone and color in the flower.

We Can Make It.

What struck me about this image was the blue sky and how it changes so drastically in this photograph. In the background of the image, the sky is very close to white, a white that plays with the idea of looking more blue than white. As my eyes find their way across the picture the color of blue changes too. The blue goes from white, to light blue to blue to dark blue, gray blue, black blue, to black. While the main focus is intended to be the rock formations I unfortunately or fortunately find the background just as interesting. The shadows on the rocks create dimension and detail, and lines that provide a good contrast against the ever changing blue background.

Late at night When the Stars are Bright

I enjoy this picture because the cactus' in the foreground look different from those in the background. In the foreground the cactus' have a lot of white surrounding the green of plant. My eyes are drawn to the outlines of the plant and then follow back toward the sunset where the plants become less and less defined until they all clump together in the dark and consumed by the shadows of the mountains.

Streamline

The color of light in this photo has a very amber or peachy tone to it. Any cool colors that exist in the scene do not read very strongly in the image being undermined by the warmer, lighter colors that reign king. The sun that is centered in the photograph doesn't have as much intensity as i think the sand and plank path does. The path is contrasts the sand well and draws in my attention. However, I find it interesting that even the shadows in the picture are not very dark. The foot prints in the sand my have a blue or purple tint to them but are not nearly as dark as they could be, and I think that is largely because of the amber coloring that encompases the picture.

What Street is This?

I like how shadow is used almost unintentionally in this image. The shadow of the street sign and lamp post look almos as if they are going to attack the girl in the photo graph. She is the birghtest thing in the photograph, making the eye look directly to her and then notice the shadowas and street around her. I usually find that black and white photographs may be without color but they are the photographs that usually pop the most giving the illusion that there is more color in the photograph than what can be seen, but this pitcure may be an acception to that rule. I feel like everything else in the photo besides the girl and shadow of the light post.

CAMELOT!

Light is a huge factor in this image, in that if there weren't hundreds of intense lights shining on this castle, one would never be able to see it. Yet again, I think the use of white light against colored objects is a great choice because no color is added to the object, the color that is already there is intensified and made to look bolder and brighter and I think without light and shadow, that this castle wouldn't look nearly as cool and intense as it does.

Do You See It?

I think this photographer did an amazing job of creating shadow and dimension in this photograph. They used light and shadow together, resulting in an image that pops and has an excellent composition. I like how I can see practically every detail of the man's face, and every fiber of his shirt. What is in the background doesn't matter and can't be seen. The light that is hitting the man's face, I believe is white light allowing the natural colors be brighter and more present and pure than if the light were gelled, I believe.

I'm Blue

The blue light coming from in between the clouds increases the shades and shadows within this picture. I enjoy how the light house is the darkest part of the photograph and holds the most shadows as well. It is the most intriguing part of the photograph and increases the intensity of the waves crashing around it. The small amount of light that is coming through the clouds is lighting and shading the photograph The light that is coming through the clouds has a blue tint and is coloring the entire image. Coloring the water and tinting the light house.
